Cargo transported by road is becoming increasingly larger. And the roads are often simply not adapted to this. In more and more cases, parts of the infrastructure need to be removed and then replaced afterwards.
This special service for exceptional transport makes us unique in Belgium. We not only carry out the route survey and the necessary route reconnaissance in advance, but we also make sure that any obstacles are moved and/or dismantled. We do this directly ourselves in both Flanders and Wallonia.
Route survey
First of all, we map out a suitable route for your exceptional transport in advance. With our experience and our extensive know-how of the road network, we often know in advance the most optimum route for your exceptional transport. But it’s sometimes necessary to conduct an extensive route survey beforehand. We examine, for example, which route is the most efficient, what obstacles could be encountered on this route, and which obstacles could possibly be moved.
Route reconnaissance
In some cases, we will also examine in depth the route that appears to be the best following our route survey. This is a very detailed process. We scrutinise the road network, the infrastructure, the limitations and obstacles on the route, and the regulations that apply to the route we have mapped out. We closely monitor aspects such as:
- The height of bridges
- The width of the road
- Weight restrictions
- The available space
We check whether your special transport can take this route and whether it can easily pass any obstacles, without incurring damage to ourselves, or causing damage to the environment.
Road survey: what needs to be removed?
For many of our colleagues/competitors from the sector, the work stops there. T-Rex Services does more. We do more. We also remove all obstacles that hinder your exceptional transport, and this involves quite a lot. With a road survey, we will determine in advance which road obstacles are causing problems, and what needs to be removed. Think of the following, for example:
- Traffic signs
- Traffic lights
- Railway signal lights
- Lighting masts
- Crossroads
- Roundabouts
- Crash barriers
- And so on.
It is even possible that some trees may need to be pruned or removed in advance, or that bushes need removing.
Applications for approvals and permits for dismantling or moving road infrastructure
You can’t, of course, simply dismantle traffic lights just because a special transport will be passing by. To do this, the necessary approvals and permits have to be applied for in good time. The relevant public companies must also be involved in time, because they will sometimes carry out these activities themselves (such as removing lighting masts, moving traffic lights, etc.).
We apply for the required approvals from municipalities and districts, as well as from the Agency for Roads and Traffic for Flanders and the Service Public Wallonie, its Walloon counterpart.
Assistance during the exceptional transport
At the time the transport takes place, we will escort your exceptional transport, and ensure that all obstacles on the road are moved before your transport passes by. All our service vehicles carry the necessary equipment for this purpose. We free the road from mobile traffic lights, for example, we install road plates if the transport has to drive over a roadside shoulder, we lift electricity cables with special cable lifts, etc. We also make sure that everything is restored or put back to its original state afterwards, of course!
